It helps to see a photo of a rough draft for a new rug. This is a piece on commission and I can better see on this small image many flaws that I want to change. I will often take photos of a rug as I hook it. It always looks different the next day and in a small screen print.
Also, take a photo of your work in progress. Put the image into a photo program such as Picasa and convert the image to black and white. This helps you see what is going to stand out, what is highlighted and what needs to change.
